Understanding Granite Grading

Granite Slabs

A Slab Selection Guide For Choosing Quality Countertops

Granite is a natural stone revered for its durability and aesthetic appeal. This makes it a popular choice for countertops in homes and businesses around the Twin Cities. However, not all granite is created equal. When choosing a granite slab for your project you will want to understand granite grades. Granite grading is a system to classify the quality of granite slabs.  In this post, we explain the factors that contribute to granite classification and describing the three primary levels of granite quality.

What is Granite Grading?

Granite grading is a classification system used by manufacturers and suppliers to categorize the quality of granite slabs. This system assesses various aspects such as origin, thickness, color, patterns, porosity, and even the processing methods used. These factors directly impact the granite’s durability, appearance, and, ultimately, its price.

Factors Influencing Granite Quality

Origin

The quarry where the granite was mined can influence its quality. Different quarries produce variations in color, pattern, and hardness.

Thickness

Standard thicknesses are ¾ inch (2 cm) and 1¼ inch (3 cm). Thicker slabs are usually more expensive and considered higher quality.

Visual Appearance

Color consistency, clarity, and the uniqueness of patterns play a vital role in grading granite.

Porosity

Less porous granite is more durable and resistant to staining, an important factor for kitchen and bathroom countertops.

Granite Quality Levels

Level 1 – Entry-Level Granite

  • Characteristics: Common colors and patterns, often thinner (2 cm).
  • Best for: Budget-friendly projects, rental properties.
  • Examples: Baltic Brown, Uba Tuba.

Level 2 – Mid-Grade Granite

  • Characteristics: Wider variety of colors, more unique patterns, generally 3 cm thick.
  • Best for: Residential kitchens, bathrooms.
  • Examples: Giallo Ornamental, Blue Pearl.

Level 3+ – High-Grade Granite

  • Characteristics: Exotic colors, rare patterns, superior thickness, and finish.
  • Best for: Luxury installations, high-end homes.
  • Examples: Magma Gold, Lapidus.
