What is quartzite?
Quartzite is a natural stone. It starts as sandstone, and intense heat and pressure over time turn it into a dense stone made mostly of quartz. Most quartzite comes in whites and grays with hints of pink or red, such as the soft white and gray of Taj Mahal Quartzite. Some slabs, like Azul Macaubas, show vivid greens and blues. Because quartzite is natural, every slab has its own veining and color, so your countertop will be one of a kind.
Is quartzite harder than granite?
Yes. Quartzite rates a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, while granite rates between 6 and 6.5, and marble is softer still. That hardness helps quartzite resist scratches and chips in a busy kitchen. Quartzite also handles heat better than engineered quartz, which high temperatures can damage. Learn more in our guide to stone hardness ratings for countertops.
Should I choose quartz or quartzite?
The names sound alike, but the materials are different. Quartz is an engineered stone made from about 90 to 95 percent ground quartz bound with resins and pigments, which gives you a uniform look and a non-porous surface. Quartzite is quarried natural stone with the variation that only nature produces. Choose quartzite if you want natural veining and strong heat resistance. Choose quartz countertops if you want a consistent pattern and no sealing. Our article on quartz versus quartzite compares the two in detail.
How do I care for quartzite countertops?
Quartzite is easy to live with. Clean it with mild soap and warm water, and wipe up wine, citrus and oil spills promptly. We recommend sealing quartzite once a year to keep it protected.
Where can I get quartzite countertops near me?
All American Granite fabricates and installs quartzite countertops for homeowners across Minneapolis, Saint Paul and the surrounding suburbs. Our template team measures your space with digital laser equipment, and we cut your countertops in our Burnsville shop on our SABERjet XP, which is built to cut hard stone like quartzite.
